ONE – SELF DEFENCE

 Everyone know’s that martial art people do not get bullied, picked on, beat up. Why? THEY HAVE SKILLS! I want to share with you some stats on violence here in the UK.  This is not to scare anyone, but everyone needs to know what is going on.  These statistics have been gathered from the rape crisis website in the UK. 

  • Approximately 85,000 women are raped in England and Wales alone every year. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts. 
  • Nearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year
  • 1 in 5 women aged 16 – 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16
  • Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police
  • Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence

Learning martial arts can make sure you do not become one of those stats. Size does not matter, what does matter is

  1. Mind-set
  2. Knowing what to do
  3. Being able to do what is needed to be done!

I teach these things is a FUN, eight step process that I call the eight qualities of a champion

  1. Vision (you have to see yourself a kickboxer)
  2. Principles (we never look for trouble, 99% of the time great communication skills will defuse a situation, but you are able to defuse a situation, because you are not scared in that situation. This is very different to just hoping you will be ok)
  3. Focus (Learning focus is easy, and is key to all success)
  4. Technique (You will be taught how to do a martial art move)
  5. Speed (speed and reflexes are very important in self defence)
  6. Power (generating power is easy when you have the right technique and great speed)
  7. Intensity (if you do something, DO IT)
  8. Repetition (you will have fun realising that the more times you train, the better you will become)

These qualities can be taught to anyone!  Martial Arts helps women acquire the skills needed so they can protect themselves.

TWO – CONFIDENCE

Confidence is the foundation of most things that you choose to do in life.  I could of just added this to the first reason above, but I wanted to keep it separate as the benefits of feeling confident in yourself changes everything.  Knowing that you can look after yourself, fills a person with Self-Belief.  Martial Arts helps a person develop social skills, so you are able to mingle and communicate better with people from all walks of life.  There are two things that influence us more than anything else in this world.  The first is who you surround yourself with is who you will become, I will talk about this later.  The second is our own self communication.  What we say to ourselves is key to success in life.  I build my students confidence, not because I am telling you are great, but because you KNOW that you are great.  A person needs “evidence” to allow them to feel great about themselves.  This is achieved by realising that you can do things.  In the martial arts it seems so hard be any good.  Well, nothing could be further from the truth, it is easy.  Let us use the Black Belt as an example.  If, at the end of day one you were expected to take the Black Belt exam.  Well, that would be a little hard, LOL.  But what if every day, in every class the goal was to simply, raise your standard!  Well, that can happen in every class, which means you get success in every class, which means that you continue to train, which means you will want to achieve your first rank, which you will pass and move onto the second term, which you will pass, and one day, the next term will be your BLACK BELT term! EASY!!

THREE – FAT LOSS

Helps you STAY IN SHAPE.  Have you ever started a fitness class then stopped?  Why?  Generally, it is not because it got too hard, it is because it got boring.  With martial arts no two lessons are ever the same.  You have coaches to help you all along your journey.  Have you ever heard the term, “goals we set are goals we get”? Well going towards earning a Black Belt is a massive goal that will keep you motivated. Running on a machine, that is stationary, is quite hard to get motivated for.  Will running work, of course.  Will you keep running, probably not.   Who wants to run for an hour!  A martial arts class is totally different.  You are thinking about learning the next move, about improving that kick, about punching harder, about having FUN.  A MASSIVE side benefit is, you are getting into the BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE!  A well-structured martial arts class is burning over 1000 calories. If it is a good school the instructor is teaching you martial arts, how to kick and punch, how to do things that could SAVE YOUR LIFE in the most effective way, while you are doing all that, you are having FUN, and getting LEAN and FIT!

FOUR – LIFE LONG FRIENDS

Starting anything new can be a little intimidating when you start.  This is why a lot of people start with friends.  To do something that you both have in common is a great way to make sure you stick to any training programme.  Martial Arts makes it very easy to make friends actually in class.  Once you learn the basics, you are moving around the room training with lots of different partners.  Everyone in the class is going through the same material as you, so everyone helps each other.  No egos at all, just a group of friends having fun and learning something new while getting results. In life, who we surround ourselves with is who we become.  Make sure the martial arts school that you choose, is not about “beating” people up.  A great school develops the whole individual, mind body and soul. This is the roots of martial arts and should never be forgotten.  Before you know it your partners become lifelong friends not just in the class, but outside as well.

FIVE – LOVE YOURSELF

OK, hear me out here.  Your body is both your weapon and armour in the martial arts.  Training regularly will teach you to respect and treat it well. This means you will learn to lead a healthier life style, with sufficient rest and fuel up with the right food.  You will want to eat well when you refer to your body as “the machine”.  I will not lecture you here about the benefits of eating good, but now you have a reason to eat great fuel.  Sure you want to get into those jeans that you have not worn for years, but you also want to beadle to do that punching combination on the bag, and you know that if you were more healthy, it would make it easier.  Training is just so much fun.
